If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, marriage, family, or relationship problems, if you are grieving over the loss of a loved one, or experiencing difficulties in your personal or professional life, a psychologist can offer you the skilled guidance you need to work your way through your pain to a place of healing, understanding, and peace of mind.

Equally as important as seeking help is finding the right type of therapy -- and the right therapist -- to work with. Different doctors will be bring different results, so it is important to understand the process of therapy, and to find a doctor you feel most comfortable and productive with.

Brenda Shoshanna, Ph.d., New York state licensed Psychologist, has been in private practice over 25 years. A recognized expert in the field of psychology, among her many fields of expertise, she provides relationship counseling, anxiety treatment, and depression and stress relief.

Dr. Shoshanna is an award winning book author, and has been published worldwide in 13 languages. Her books address the nature of how to establish a sense of well being with one's relationships and oneself.

She is here to offer you experienced therapy in her New York City office - or sessions by telephone from anywhere in the United States.

What does research show about the effectiveness of psychotherapy?

Research suggests that therapy effectively decreases patients' depression and anxiety and related symptoms -- such as pain, fatigue and nausea. Psychotherapy has also been found to increase survival time for heart surgery and cancer patients, and it can have a positive effect on the body's immune system. Research increasingly supports the idea that emotional and physical health are very closely linked and that therapy can improve a person's overall health status.

There is convincing evidence that most people who have at least several sessions of psychotherapy are far better off than untreated individuals with emotional difficulties. One major study showed that 50 percent of patients noticeably improved after eight sessions while 75 percent of individuals in psychotherapy improved by the end of six months. Psychotherapy with children is similar in effectiveness to psychotherapy with adults.

Therapy is an effective means to pursue anxiety treatment, as well as treatment for depression, stress, and relationship difficulties. Research into the effects of marriage counseling, for example, has provided results indicating that married couples who seek relationship counseling are more likely to, as individuals and as a couple, report increased feelings of well being and security, compared to those who do not undertake relationship counseling at all.
